How so? Nikola Zamanja, in 1482 founded this church as the vow during the plague epidemic of 1481-83. He donated land for construction so that the monks from Dubrovnik would have a place to hide during outbreaks. However, when the foundation stone was laid, the title was changed to the St Nicholas church. Probably, this change happened because of the great worship of St Nicholas among the islanders. The church is a gothic-renaissance single-nave building with a 30 m high bell tower, which was added later. <\/p>\n

Above the entrance, you can spot the beautiful rosette with acanthus leaves. When you step inside, your glance will lead to the altarpiece from the 16th century. It represents an economic and cultural rise of the small community due to the developed seafaring.[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.4.3″ background_enable_image=”off” custom_padding_tablet=”” custom_padding_phone=”0px||||false|false” custom_padding_last_edited=”on|phone”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.4.7″ module_alignment=”center” custom_padding_tablet=”” custom_padding_phone=”” custom_padding_last_edited=”on|desktop” text_text_align=”justify” locked=”off”]It can be connected to the local master Kristofor Antunovi\u0107. However, besides the wooden statue of St Nicholas, only two depictions stayed preserved. There is a cemetery in the church. This kind of burial was forbidden by Napoleon in the 19th century.

The Dominican Order<\/h2>\n

[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.4.7″ module_alignment=”center” custom_padding_tablet=”” custom_padding_phone=”” custom_padding_last_edited=”on|desktop” hover_enabled=”0″ text_text_align=”justify” locked=”off”]The prevalence and density of monastic monasteries testify to a strategic vision of territory defence. Besides that, monasteries were hotspots of spiritual and intellectual life.<\/p>\n

The Dominican Order is a mendicant order. It arose as a reaction to the overall situation in the church and society. They also studied, preached, and practiced the apostolate. Therefore, they were in direct contact with people. The first Dominicans came to the Croatian regions during the life of St. Dominic. In 1225 they founded a monastery in Dubrovnik. Renovation of the Dominican monastery and the church<\/h2>\n

[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.4.7″ module_alignment=”center” custom_padding_tablet=”” custom_padding_phone=”” custom_padding_last_edited=”on|desktop” hover_enabled=”0″ text_text_align=”justify” locked=”off”]<\/p>\n

The devastating earthquake from 1667 destroyed the Dominican monastery and the church. After repair, the church remained in function. However, the monastery never got restored. Now it is used as a garden, and it is in a private property.<\/p>\n

A new earthquake in 1979 further damaged the church, which affected its decay. It was renovated in 1994 with the help of the locals and patrons.<\/p>\n

The renovation of the main altar started in 1997 by professors and students from the Conservation and Restoration, University of Applied Sciences, Cologne. Society for the Preservation of the Natural and Artistic Heritage of Lopud worked closely on International Conservation Workshop Lopud with students and professors from Cologne, Antwerpen, Bruxelles, Split, and Dubrovnik for years.<\/p>\n
